Week of Thankfulness - Day 3

Today I want to say how thankful I am for my hubby, his job and lots and lots of patience.

My hubby decided shortly after we met that he wanted to learn a trade. He was already working for a private company as a plumber's apprentice, but he worked all hours of the day and night and had to carry a beeper on the weekends.  He took a big pay cut to start off in a local union's plumbing apprenticeship school. Little did we know that this one decision would make such a big financial difference in our lives.

Through his apprenticeship he earned small raises each year and when my daughter was born we decided I should stay home to raise her.  Finances have always been tight but we are okay with that. We appreciate everything we have been given.

My hubby and I are very thankful for his current employer. He has worked for many companies over the years, but really lucked out with his current one. They trained him to work in their drafting department when he could no longer work in the field because of medical issues.

I'm also extremely thankful for the lots and lots of patience I was given today.

I'm sure I don't need to remind anyone that tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Well Wednesdays are our usual grocery shopping day and because Thanksgiving is tomorrow all the stores were extremely crowded. Like crazy crowded and I don't do well in crowds.

I'm used to shopping with a bunch of older folks and a few stay at home moms. Today it looked like the Black Friday ads on TV with lines and lines of people. Where did all these people come from???

Anyways, my kids who don't enjoy shopping at all were very good. Not a lot of complaining, bickering or arguing. I was thrilled to say the least.

What are you thankful for?

Week of Thankfulness - Day 2 Thankful for the Mess

Today I'm very thankful for my messy house.

Yep, I said that.

I'm thankful to have a sink full of dirty dishes, piles of laundry, and even rooms to clean up.

No, I didn't go crazy and yes I do work to keep it clean.

When I see a sink full of dirty dishes that means I had food to feed my family. Hopefully something nutritious, delicious and filling.

When there are piles of laundry to be washed I know I have a house full of people who need me. They don't just need my help cleaning their clothes, but they need me to teach them how to be an independent person when they grow up.

So yes, I'm thankful for the messes my family makes, because it means that I have people who still need me, as their wife or mom.

I love that I'm needed because I know someday soon I won't be. That's the job of a parent - raise your children so they are happy, productive human beings that don't need you but hopefully still love and want you.

What are you thankful for today?

Week of Thankfulness - Day 1 With Thanksgiving Printable

Since this is Thanksgiving week I decided to make it a week full of thankfulness on the blog.

My kids are off school all week and today was my youngest child's Parent-Teacher Conference, so I wanted to express how thankful I am that my kids attend such wonderful schools.

All my kids have gone to the same elementary school. We love the principal, teachers and staff.  Just last week the principal let the students wrap him up with tissue paper like a mummy and in the past he allowed the students to duct tape him to the wall. He knows the names of almost all the kids and even the most of the families.

The teachers are caring, helpful and go above and beyond to help their students. The reason they can do this is because lots of parents volunteer. Not just in the classroom, but in the office, at the copier, even helping out from home.

If you want a great school for your children - start by helping out. Any little bit of time you can give to help out will help make the school better. Giving just 10 minutes copying papers for a teacher can give them 10 minutes more to spend with the students or plan their classes.

Maybe your child's school is not all that wonderful, but one teacher or staff member is. What matters most is there is a person your child enjoys.

I am thankful that there are wonderful adults to surround my children each day. They help them grow, learn and help them nurture their curiosity.

Enjoy this free printable I created to help you remember all the many things you have to be thankful for.  Click Here

10 Empowering Tips to Get You Through the Holidays

Sorry I'm a bit under the weather today, so I have arranged for a guest post for today. Hope you all have a wonderful day and I'll be back tomorrow with the Freebies on Friday post.

10 Empowering Tips to Get You Through the Holidays
By Amy Sherman

Empowerment is one of those words that's often tossed around, but not many people know what it really means. Consider empowerment to be an individual process, a journey or path you take in order to achieve desires and fulfillment.

During the holidays, it's especially important to feel empowered so you make healthy choices and preserve your sense of personal power.

The holiday season can be a very special, wonderful time if you maintain who you are by not compromising your values or integrity. Here are some effective tips to help you do this:

1. Know that your holiday does not have to be based on the Hollywood image of perfection. Be sure your expectations are realistic and be honest with yourself about what you can and cannot do during the season.

2. Take a mental, physical and emotional break every once in a while so you can enjoy the festivities and feel revitalized. You need to recoup and recharge, so give yourself some quiet time. Escape to a room, take a ride, or walk around the neighborhood. Whatever you do, you're doing it because it will make a significant difference in your outlook when you return. It is very empowering to know you can decide HOW you feel, no matter what the circumstances.

3. Don't try to do everything alone. Get everyone to help by breaking down the tasks so that things become more manageable for you. Try not to control or get involved in how they "do things" so that there's less pressure on you.

4. Holiday time is associated with family togetherness. If the dynamic of your family changed because of strained relations, fragmentation, or death, you may have to create a new tradition that will redefine your family shared time and give you new, more positive memories.

5. Your sense of humor is very important. Use humor to relieve your stress. So, look at the lighter side of things and laugh, joke and be silly. Remember to not take yourself or the situation too seriously. That will only upset your mood and compromise your peace and harmony. Laugh and you'll feel much better.

6. Stop complaining or falling into patterns of criticism, defensiveness and even withdrawal. If you must complain, complain constructively, focusing on resolution and compromise. Your intent is not to hurt anybody on purpose, but to express yourself so your feelings are understood. Be sure your communication is clear and concise and not focused on blame.

7. Refuse to be a prisoner of other people's expectations. You can do less and still feel good about what you've done.

8. Be grateful for all you do have during the holidays. No matter how annoying, anxious or dissatisfied you are with things, make your holiday experience as pleasant as possible. It's in your own best interest to experience a joyful, not dreadful holiday.

9. Get rid of your desire to change people (friends/family). Acceptance is the only way to go so you won't feel frustrated. Look at those people who need "help", not as projects, but as characters in a movie. However, their lives turn out is under their direction.

10. Plan on making the holiday great. Use words like, "best," "terrific," "wonderful" to describe how you'd like your holiday season to be. Visualize yourself feeling relaxed and being appreciated. By pre-programming how you'd like it to be, you are setting the stage for it to happen. Then sit back and enjoy the festivities.

The holiday season brings together families and friends at a time when thoughts and deeds are focused on charity and good will. Through enjoyment, affection and an open heart, your holiday can be all you hope it to be and much more!

Who Else is Sick of Peppermint Patty?

My kids love watching the Charlie Brown and Peanuts movies.  We have lots on DVD and even VHS. "The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" are our favorites, however,  I've never been a fan of the Thanksgiving movie.  If you haven't seen it you can watch it here http://youtu.be/8MuaOf0hGVM

To be honest I find Peppermint Patty down right annoying!

She invites herself to Thanksgiving dinner at Charlie Brown's house when he wasn't even planning on eating dinner there. His family planned to celebrate Thanksgiving at his grandparents home.  Then if that wasn't bad enough she invites all her friends too. Plus she doesn't even bring a dish. Wow!

Yes, I know this is a cartoon character I'm talking about and no I'm not going crazy (well maybe a little :-P).

Just curious, is there a movie or character from a holiday show that really gets under your skin?

What is Your Favorite Thanksgiving Dish?

I have a huge extended family. Lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Plus boyfriends and girlfriends of family members.

Our Thanksgiving dinner is usually at one of my aunt's homes and is a pretty spectacular occasion.

It's could be considered fancy with fine china, freshly polished silver ware and glass water goblets. To me it feels wonderful, cozy and a lot of fun.

Everyone brings a dish or dessert while my aunt supplies the turkey.

My favorite side dish by far is actually two combined. I love sauerkraut mixed with mashed potatoes.  I like the sauerkraut not too sour and regular plain mashed potatoes. All mixed together.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving Day dish?
